Are we stuck in an absurd space-time capsule?
Goodness, how time flies! Yes, to become complete caricatures, all we need now is a rocking chair on which to rock back and forth in feigned frenzy while we stand still, muttering through our dentures about how much better things used to be!
Yet it’s true: the pace is accelerating as fast as the blink of an eye. Already in February. Already in 2026. And even if the hourglass continues to let its tiny grains of sand slip away, guided by relentless gravity, we will never praise the past. Here, we’re rather progressive! Technology, medicine, astronomy, the arts and all human intelligence are experiencing such tremendous growth that one could almost believe the same is true in politics.
Oops. The P word has just been mentioned. This term alone conveys the whole contradiction of humanity. The P word has become the ideal excuse to twist backwards and rediscover the quintessence of humanoid rot by validating racism, eugenics or Islamophobia through freedom of expression and democracy.
So no, things weren’t better before, when people were segregated because of their melanin levels, their desire to love or their beliefs. No, things weren’t better before, when fascist doctrines were applied, which the philosopher Benedetto Croce already described in the 1950s as an “intellectual and moral disease”. No, it wasn’t better before, when women couldn’t vote or work without asking permission from their husbands or fathers. No, it wasn’t better when rape culture was so normalised that it took a MeToo movement to start opening people’s eyes, which are still very much closed today because it doesn’t suit the patriarchal hegemony that still prevails.
So let’s talk about it today! Wouldn’t we be moving in two diametrically opposed directions, one foot stuck in the past, the other towards the future, tearing ourselves apart? Let’s pull ourselves together and keep moving forward. No going backwards.
