One Earth, one multiverse

If flat-earthers are a laughable caricature because they firmly believe in the far-fetched theory that the Earth is as flat as a pancake, with unbreakable edges acting as an ice barrier preventing the oceans from overflowing, what can be said about the other theory that is emerging? The one where, within this same Earth, a strange multiverse is home to creatures of the same species with wildly different temporalities?

This results in a world that closely resembles our own. In fact, it is our world. And unlike flat-earthers, this is no laughing matter. It’s even scary.

The first reality of this world has only two words to describe its urgent priorities: Fashion Week. Hundreds of thousands of lives are at stake. And deep down, even if it’s said with a sighing tone of irony, despite the apparent vanity of the fashion world, it’s true. Because resources flow freely there, allowing an economy to be nourished between supply and demand, which in turn allows job seekers to be nourished.

This world of glitz and glamour sees cameras clicking away around a socialite lifestyle where celebrities from around the world use colossal financial and media resources, leaving behind their prestigious carbon footprint, to watch a parade of fabrics worn by skeletal models expressing an art form they don’t always understand and couldn’t care less about. Because at Fashion Week, you’re not there to see, but to be seen.

The other reality of the world doesn’t care who wears what. It tries to prove its humanity in the face of monstrosity aboard a flotilla, desperately feeding the disadvantaged people who populate this Earth, who are starved and massacred to extinction with the utmost hypocrisy and sadistic intent. All this for a piece of land. This world literally embodies David who, at the risk of his life, rushes straight towards Goliath with unequal weapons for the sole purpose of being seen. He wants all the cameras to be focused on him. He no longer wants to watch. Following an odious Hunger Game on his smartphone has exceeded his tolerance threshold.

What can be said about the clashes in part of this same world caused by a fed-up Gen Z that deplores the irrational choices made for them? Spending lavish sums on appearances and frills for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations while hospitals are sorely lacking in resources only makes sense to a king whose sole aim is also to be seen and acclaimed by an entire continent.

These parallel realities reveal a common goal: to arouse interest, even if the spotlight is shining in opposite directions. Yet this Earth should allow them to meet. Hypervigilance is not a way of life. The world needs fashion and sport for entertainment, for creativity, for dreams, for their lightness. But denying the existence of imbalances continues to widen the gap in the balance of humanity. Double standards.
