Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama: a gigantic and colourful facade renovation

Yayoi Kusama knows how to make people’s eyes glaze over her art: by simply seeing things in a big way. In a grey Paris in January, she managed to bring a touch of colour in XXL. And what better way than to lay siege to the emblematic Louis Vuitton building to announce a new and gigantic collab?

She’s a visionary with a brushstroke as clever as her publicity stunt. Japanese contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama set up shop on January 5, 2022 on the world’s most popular avenue to announce a collection with Louis Vuitton.

Creating a surprise with an iconic luxury brand

Just stroll down the Champs Elysées and you’ll see the artist’s imposing carbon copy leaning against the luxury brand’s illustrious building, inlaying her trademark Polka dots, which are to be found in the collection announced with great fanfare.

Called Creating Infinity, it brings together a large number of models. From clothes, to shoes, to accessories, but also perfumes: nearly 400 unique pieces.

Polka’s points: a unique style

Yayoi Kusama is obviously not new to the art world and has been expressing herself for decades through works with avant-garde themes. The aestheticism of the work on the Champs Elysées is therefore perplexing in its originality. After all, it’s not every street corner that you come across a giant of what appears to be human proportions in the middle of a facade renovation in Paris.

For the more curious, go to Place Vendôme where, in parallel, another work has been installed in one of the other Louis Vuitton shops. This time in normal size behind a window where one is astonished by the realism of the automaton that represents her tirelessly painting the same polka dots, eternal symbols of her identity. Between surprise and constancy, the 93-year-old doyenne knows how to make her way in a prestigious way.
